Courtyard Houses

A site with a considerable number of constraints and an unsuccessful planning history.  With two previous planning refusals the site required an innovative design strategy to address issues of scale, form, appearance, overlooking from all four perspectives and wider conservation contextual issues. The concept was to relate to typical outbuilding and garage typologies common on similar sites present in 1950’s development within the outer city areas of London, thus creating a contextual consistency. Our design response to this and other site constraints led to a proposal of two individual subordinate dwellings arranged around an inward looking habitable courtyard sunk below ground level. Our primary focus was to deal with the aforementioned constraints whilst providing plenty of natural light, views and amenity.
